I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the main isolation valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

Once that is done, give our plumber a call, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you rapidly to fix the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant possessions from the area, and clean up any water or place a container to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
