I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you can’t find the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
