I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our team a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting, clear away any significant possessions from the area, and clean up any water or position a bucket to catch the drips. If you turned the mains water off, also switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
