I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is still water leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go immediately to the main water valve for your home. If you’re unable to find a water valve to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and minimise the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a call, no matter what the day or time is. We’ll be with you shortly to get things sorted.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, remove any significant things from the area, and clean up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
