I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the service valve to the appliance or fixture if you can, or go straight to the main water shutoff valve for your home. If you are unable to locate a tap to turn off, then you can try turning on all the cold taps inside and outside your residence to depressurise the system and reduce the leak.

Once that’s sorted, give our plumber a ring, whatever the day or time is. We’ll be with you promptly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any important things close to the leak, and wipe up any water or position a container to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
