I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

If water is still leaking, turn off the water at the nearest valve and then at the mains tap outside. If you cannot locate the water main shutoff valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and minimise the leak.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant items close to the leak, and clean up any water or place a container to catch the drips. If you have turned the mains water off, switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don�t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
